Classroom Assistants. Volunteers are placed in classrooms (K-5) to provide assistance with both individualized and small group instruction within all curricular areas. The role of a classroom volunteer includes working with students of all levels and assisting with a variety of academic needs. Many classroom volunteers become an integral part of the classroom community, and some return year after year.
Intergenerational Math Program (IMP)
Volunteers are paired with students primarily in first, second, and third grade for one-to-one tutoring or small group work, enabling teachers to differentiate instruction to meet a range of learners effectively. Training is provided in skill and enrichment activities that correspond to concepts that students are learning, and in the Math in Focus curriculum used by Cambridge Public Schools. The goal of the IMP is to improve students’ inquiry-based math skills and increase their enthusiasm for math.
Early Literacy Programs
Volunteers work one-to-one, or with small groups of children, in Kindergarten through third grade, to improve reading and writing. Classroom volunteers assist with Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop. During Writers Workshop volunteers assist with conferencing to reinforce effective writing strategies and specific skills. Training is provided on relevant topics.
Publishing Center Program
Volunteers are trained in the art of book-making in order to work with individual or small groups of students, in Kindergarten through third grade. In their weekly visits to the school’s Publishing Center, these volunteers encourage students to write and illustrate their original stories that they then “publish” as hand-made books.
Volunteers help students identify resources, provide assistance with shelving and checking out books, handle circulation and front desk duties. In many cases, library volunteers share specialized skills in the areas of storytelling, reading aloud, book repair, cataloging, book-making, computer services and more.
